For many, company team building can be seen as a luxury rather than a necessity, but that may not always be the case. In fact, your company could be suffering from a lack of engaging, fun team building activities. Below are eight signs from Forbes that your business needs to seriously consider investing in team building:

  • Employees aren’t seeing eye to eye.
  • You notice signs like people gossiping in hushed whispers, politics are more engaging than actual work, and it’s the same people over and over speaking up in meetings.
  • Your team isn’t collaborating.
  • Company performance is down, processes are breaking down, and you people are often lady o absent.
  • Team building is a good idea for any team, regardless of these warning signs!
  • Your team doesn’t have clear goals, the goals that do exist aren’t being met, and there’s a lack of focus in meetings.
  • Team members are battling among each other.
  • You’ve recently introduced new products or processes.

The Truth About Employee Engagement

Screen Shot 2016-05-15 at 8.33.16 AM

Employee engagement is one of the most important factors in determining the overall health of your company. Think about it – employees who are happy at work are more likely to be productive, better workers, and loyal to the business. Studies have shown that disengaged employees are detrimental to many facets of a company, including the business’ bottom line. Can your company afford to employ unhappy workers?

In the 2014 TINYpulse Employee Engagement and Organizational Culture Report, more than 500 organizations were surveyed, and many of the numbers are grim:

  • Close to 80% of workers don’t feel that they’re strongly valued by their companies.
  • At least 25% of employees don’t have the tools they need to do their jobs well.
  • Two-thirds of workers don’t see opportunities for advancement in their current positions.
  • About half of employees don’t care for their boss.

Perhaps even more telling from the survey? The top reason employees go above and beyond in the workplace isn’t because they love their jobs or want to see the company succeed or think there may be more money in it for them; it’s because of their coworkers and camaraderie.

With that in mind, team building can offer the perfect solution. Employees who routinely undergo fun, exciting team building activities are likely happier and more engaged in the workplace. That alone has enormous benefits for your company. The other boost? Team building strengthens bonds within your workplace, thus creating workers who are even more willing to go the extra mile for the company.

If you haven’t given team building a try yet, why not? There’s much more to gain than there is to lose.

NHL Team Credits Team Building With Postseason Success

It’s been a long time coming for the Nashville Predators, who, earlier this week, forced a decisive Game 7 against the San Jose Sharks after battling back late in the third period for an overtime win. The Preds’ are closer than they’ve ever been before to the Western Conference Finals.

The Predators’ season very nearly ended after the Sharks scored the go-ahead goal after Preds’ netminder, Pekka Rinne, simply slipped and fell in front of the net. Instead, the team battled back for a 4-3 win in the extra frame.

General Manager David Poile credits team building with the Preds’ on-ice success this season. Poile learned his love of team building from his father, Bud, who also served as an NHL GM. The younger Poile recently talked to USA Today about how important he believes team chemistry is to on-ice success.

You can read more about how the Preds say team building was their secret ingredient this season here.

Fun Company Team Building Ideas

We love collecting information on team building ideas here at TeamBuildNYC, so we’re always excited to see another article promoting different, fun team building activities. Last week, SmallBizTrends.com published a list of their top four popular and fun team building exercises. What makes their list so great is that it’s a combination of activities that can be done in or outside the office.

1) Office Trivia – SmallBizTrends.com suggests a round of office trivia to get your team members talking and bonding. To play, all you need is to come up with a list of questions about your company and even about your team members. Example questions include “How many people work here?,” “What year was the company founded?” and “Who is our CEO?.” Divide your team up into groups and have a fun trivia afternoon.

2) A Truth and a Lie – This is an oldie but goodie. In this activity, each team member shares two things about themselves, but there’s a catch: one of the statements is totally made up. It’s up to the group to determine what’s true and what’s false. This is a great way for your team members to get to know each other and have fun in surprising ways!

3) Volunteer – Volunteering is almost never a bad idea, but adding it to the team building repertoire is a great way to boost company morale and get out of the office. Volunteering activities can be as simple as planting trees or more involved like helping with a Habitat for Humanity project or walking shelter dogs for an afternoon.

4) Scavenger Hunts – Who doesn’t love a good treasure hunt? You can either design your own within the office or you can let someone else do the work for you. We love Museum Hack’s scavenger hunts in New York, Washington D.C., and San Francisco!

Forbes Suggests In-Office Team Building Activities

In a recent article for Forbes, AJ Agrawal, CEO and co-founder of Alumnify Inc., writes about the importance of team building activities and suggests ten exercises senior management can try with their team to improve office morale today. Agrawal throws out some frightening statistics – including the fact that 80% of Americans surveyed have said they often feel stressed at work. Below are some of Agrawal’s suggestions for team building activities to help everyone have a little more fun during the daily grind:

  • Helium Stick – Your team members line up facing each other. You’ll place a long thin rod on everyone’s index finger and it’s their job to lower themselves and the rod to the ground.
  • Mine Field – Find a big, open space, and place some objects on the ground. Those are your mines. Divvy your team up into groups and blindfold one person from each pair. It’s their partner’s job to guide them across the space without getting blown up by a mine.
  • Pipeline – This is a great game no matter how big or small your group is. Each team member will get one piece of half-pipe tubing. It’s up to your team to get the marble from one end of the pipe to the other without it dropping to the ground.

How Team Building Influences Britain’s Davis-Cup Winning National Team

Team building isn’t just for business and companies. It plays a surprising but important role anytime there are groups of people working together to reach a common goal. The team captain of Britain’s Davis Cup-winning national tennis team recently spoke about how crucial team building was for his group.

According to Davis, the eight secrets to team building success are:

  1. Always maintain eye contact.
  2. Base difficult decisions on facts, not emotions.
  3. Let everyone stick to their usual habits and routines.
  4. Everyone needs to broaden their skillset.
  5. Never let your work environment go stale.
  6. Good teams are built on good preparation.
  7. Encourage the classic principles of hard work and reward.
  8. Teams don’t work unless everyone is having fun.

4 Quick Team Building Activities You Can Do Today

While we like to talk about team building events and activities that you can do as a chance to get out of the office and recharge for an afternoon, there’s still something to be said for quick team building activities you can do anywhere. Is your budget for team building not quite what you’d like it to be? Or maybe you’re between company events but don’t want all the progress your team made at their last outing to fade into the sunset. Perhaps you’re just looking for a few fun activities to liven up your next meeting. No matter what your reasons are, HLNTV.com has put together a great list of four team building activities you can do today.

  • Mad Libs Mission Statement – HLNTV.com suggests printing out copies of your company’s mission statement while leaving several blank lines where key words would ordinarily be. It’s up to your team members to fill in the blanks!
  • 2 Truths & a Lie – This is a fun game no matter who you’re playing with! Each person announces three statements about themselves. One of those statements is true, while two are false. Team members will go around and guess which is true and which are the lies – and they’ll learn fun facts about their coworkers in the process!
  • Find the Common Thread – Is there one hobby, activity, or even TV show that your entire team enjoys? It’s their job to find out. Once the group settles on an activity that unites them, instruct them to put together a list of assumptions, stereotypes, or judgments that are typically associated with people who enjoy this activity. It’s a quick way to emphasize the risks of stereotyping while also encouraging your team members to find what they have in common.
  • The Perfect Square – In this interactive activity, your team members will stand in a circle before being blindfolded. Once you’re sure no one can see, have each person hold onto a rope tied together at its ends. Your team’s challenge is to turn their circle into a perfect square without removing their blindfolds. It’s an activity that really promotes communication and leadership skills – and it may give you new insights in your team members’ personalities, too!

There you have it. Four quick, easy team building activities you can do at your next meeting – all without leaving the office!
